Dr. Justin Arner is a double board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor focused on the surgical and non-surgical management of knee, shoulder, elbow, and hip injuries in Pittsburgh, PA. He has been named a Castle Connolly and Pittsburgh Magazine Top Doctor, which represents the top 7% of doctors in the country. Dr. Arner has specialized training and technical expertise in complex shoulder and knee arthroscopy, shoulder instability surgery, cartilage and meniscus surgery, elbow surgery, and sports hip injuries. Dr. Arner believes in individualized treatment for his patients with the highest level techniques and technologies. Dr. Arner was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania.

Specialized world-renowned training
Dr. Arner pursued specialized training with a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the world-renowned Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. He learned advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques for the treatment of complex shoulder, knee, elbow, and hip as well as all sports-related injuries. While in fellowship, Dr. Arner cared for professional athletes from the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, and WWE in addition to treating collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes. He was also a team physician for the US Men’s and Women’s Alpine Ski and Snowboard Teams. During fellowship, Dr. Arner won the prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Clinical Fellow Research Award given to the top research project in the country.

Dr. Arner completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA where he won the Outstanding Chief Resident Award as well as numerous other awards. He graduated medical school at West Virginia University with honors and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Arner graduated with the highest honors (summa cum laude) from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV where he was a member of the NCAA Division II football team.

Research and Awards
Dr. Arner has published over 100 research papers and book chapters in prestigious scientific journals and given over 100 presentations both nationally and internationally. He has been recognized as one of the top 3% of orthopaedic researchers by Avant-Garde Health. He has also won numerous national research awards and grants. Dr. Arner’s main research interests include anterior shoulder instability, posterior instability, shoulder arthritis, cartilage injury, knee ligament tears, athletic hip injuries, as well as other sports injuries.

He is a principal reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), an Editorial Board Member for the Arthroscopy Journal, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES), Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS), Journal of Hip Surgery, as well as numerous others.

Dr. Arner was chosen as the top rated orthopaedic surgeon in the UPMC system based on patients reviews for 2020 and is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. He is also a member of the Council of Delegates and is the Northeast Region Representative for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Dr. Arner is an elected committee member for the AOSSM, Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES). Dr. Arner is on the credentialing committee for UPMC St. Margaret.

Dr. Arner is a member of the NFL Physicians Society. He is an Editorial Board Member for the prestigious Arthroscopy Journal and is a host on their weekly podcast. He has been selected as an Emerging Leader for the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES), and the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA).

Sports Team Coverage
Dr. Arner is a team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers as well as the US Ski and Snowboard Team and travels as their doctor both nationally and internationally. He has provided medical care for the Pittsburgh Penguins and University of Pittsburgh Athletics as well as numerous high schools.

Dr. Arner’s personal life
Dr. Arner enjoys spending time with his wife and son as well as biking, skiing, traveling, and being active. Dr. Arner was born and raised in Clarion, PA and has a strong desire to help his local community improve their quality of life.
